Chapter 20

“A bet is a bet—you’re not going to back out, are you?” Ye Fengyun grinned at Lin Lei.

Lin Lei’s face was burning. “Who’s backing out? It’s just a million, I’ll pay!”

But Ye Fengyun only chuckled. “I don’t really need that million right now. I’m not too interested.”

“Then what do you want?” A sense of foreboding washed over Lin Lei, and cold sweat began to bead on his skin.

Ye Fengyun’s smile turned wicked. “I want to see you streak on the news.”

“You—!” Lin Lei stumbled back several steps, almost landing flat on the ground.

“Can’t take your loss?” Ye Fengyun teased, spreading his hands. “So it turns out Director Tang’s husband, and the Lin family’s scion, can’t keep their word.”

“Who—who says I can’t—” Lin Lei was at a loss.

“Don’t embarrass yourself any further!” Tang Yilin, furious, dragged Lin Lei away.

Watching their awkward retreat, Ye Fengyun shrugged. “Looks like he really can’t take it.”

Tang Shihan covered her mouth, laughing softly. She chided him kindly, “You shouldn’t embarrass them so much. That’s enough. After all, we’re still family.”

Ye Fengyun put on a roguish grin. “Dear wife, now do you see how capable your husband really is? I told you, being my wife is your good fortune. With me around, your future is smooth sailing!”

Tang Shihan was in such a good mood she couldn’t be bothered to argue. She humored him, “Yes, yes, you’re the best.”

“Heh, there are plenty more things I’m good at. You can take your time discovering them,” Ye Fengyun said, tossing her a playful wink.

This man…

Tang Shihan didn’t know whether to laugh or cry, but her impression of Ye Fengyun had changed greatly.

If he hadn’t stopped her from leaving, she would never have seen Tang Yilin’s defeat, nor would she have the peace of mind to face work the next day.

It was all thanks to Ye Fengyun’s persistence that she finally vented her frustrations.

This man didn’t seem as hopeless as she once thought…

As these thoughts crossed her mind, Tang Shihan quickly shook her head.

What am I thinking? There’s no way I’m falling for him, right? What a joke—he’s so ugly…

But…

She glanced at Ye Fengyun. His confident smile and easy composure seemed even more attractive.

Looks are given by one’s parents, but an outstanding soul—that’s what truly attracts, what truly charms.

She had to admit, Ye Fengyun did possess a unique magnetism. Tang Shihan found herself more and more curious about his abilities.

The moment a woman becomes curious about a man is the beginning of her downfall.

Unfortunately, Tang Shihan, unversed in matters of the heart, didn’t realize this. By the time she did, she’d likely be in far too deep to pull herself out.

But that’s a story for another time.

The banquet went smoothly and was full of joy.

Tang Shihan had expected the evening to be dull and dreary, but when surprise arrived, her mood was as if it had started raining carrots in a rabbit’s world.

By contrast, things were far less optimistic on Tang Yilin’s side.

“What’s going on? Why did it end up being Tang Shihan?” Tang Yilin and Lin Lei quarreled in a deserted corner, pacing back and forth, both agitated.

“I boasted to all our relatives and friends—how am I supposed to explain this? Didn’t you see Tang Shihan’s face? She was practically floating with pride!

“It’s infuriating! I was meant to be the star of the evening—why did it become her?!”

Tang Yilin kept complaining, while Lin Lei wiped cold sweat from his brow.

“Enough! I’m making a call.”

Lin Lei dialed a senior executive at Longhai Group.

“Hello, it’s me, Lin Lei. About what we discussed, the investment proposal—”

“Oh, about that,” the executive replied, “the plan was to select Director Tang Yilin, but we received instructions from above to give the opportunity to someone important.”

“Someone important? Since when is Tang Shihan considered important?” Lin Lei laughed in disbelief.

“We’re just following orders, that’s all. And, Mr. Lin, I’m only returning a favor to the Lin family, not acting as your servant. Please mind your tone when you speak to me.”

The final words weren’t loud, but their authority was unmistakable—even through the phone, Lin Lei could feel the oppressive aura. He shuddered involuntarily.
