Meng Yier shook her head, her brows knitted together, feeling a deep sense of helplessness. “Mingxin, what do you plan to do?”

Yu Mingxin was silent for a long time before she lifted her head, a bitter smile hanging on her lips, her voice thick with unspoken sorrow and desolation. “You’re right. Perhaps I really should give up…”

Meng Yier took her slightly chilly hand, gazing into Yu Mingxin’s indifferent eyes, and spoke with unwavering resolve, “Mingxin, no matter what, I support you. I only wish for you to always be happy, to always be that carefree girl.”

Yu Mingxin couldn’t help but laugh, dispelling the shadows of grief from moments ago. “Carefree? Are you really my best friend? Meng Yier, who says that about their closest friend?”

Seeing Yu Mingxin finally reveal the side she was so familiar with, Meng Yier felt a wave of relief. She gently patted her head and said with a smile, “Good girl, this is the Yu Mingxin I know.”

Yu Mingxin gave a wry smile and once again rested her head on Meng Yier’s shoulder.

After a long while, Yu Mingxin sat up and said softly, “Xiao Yi, I want to go to America.”

Meng Yier looked at her in confusion. “America?”

A glimmer of light flashed in Yu Mingxin’s eyes. “Once my mother’s health improves, I’ll go to America. I want to see him one more time.”

Meng Yier hesitated, biting her lip, then said in a low voice, “Mingxin, whatever happens, I just hope you find happiness.”

Yu Mingxin’s condition had never really improved, and Meng Yier, unable to relax, stayed with her at the hospital until evening.

The taxi stopped beneath the Riverside Garden Apartment complex, and Meng Yier stepped out.

“Miss Meng—”

She looked up at the sound of someone calling her name, only to meet the deep, sapphire gaze of a man leaning casually against a luxury car, dressed in a tailored suit.

Seeing her, Carson’s calm face broke into that familiar, heartwarming smile of his.

Meng Yier paused, remembering his proposal yesterday, and her heart raced with anxiety.

She had meant to sort out her feelings about her situation with Carson today, hoping to clear things up before making any decisions. When she met Yu Mingxin earlier, she’d wanted to tell her about it and ask for her advice. But seeing Yu Mingxin so troubled by her own affairs and her mother’s health, Meng Yier simply couldn’t bring herself to add to her worries.

Steadying herself, Meng Yier walked over with poise and grace, smiling as she said, “Mr. Carson, what brings you here?”

“Miss Meng, would you do me the honor of joining me for dinner?”

Meng Yier hesitated, torn between accepting and declining, when Carson gave a gentle laugh, his expression showing he understood everything. He teased, “Don’t worry, I’m not in a hurry for your answer.”

Meng Yier was briefly at a loss for words. She knew he was referring to his proposal. She forced a smile in return, though it was tinged with awkwardness.

“Let’s go, then—”

They got into the car. Carson gave the driver an address, and the engine started.

The car stopped outside a French restaurant. The manager greeted them with respect and led Carson and Meng Yier to a spacious private room on the second floor.

At the entrance and inside the room, four or five servers stood attentively. In the center was a long dining table already set with exquisite French cuisine, each dish a feast for the senses. In the middle of the table was a large bouquet of fiery red roses, their subtle fragrance filling the air.

Carson signaled for the servers to withdraw, then walked over to Meng Yier, pulling out her chair like a gentleman and inviting her to sit.
