Chapter 118: Rejecting His Proposal

A faint smile touched Carson’s face as he gazed quietly out the window for a moment. Then he turned to look at Meng Yier, his low, sensual voice carrying a trace of restraint.
“You’re trying to tell me that you can’t accept my marriage proposal…”
Meng Yier froze again. She stared blankly at Carson, astonished that he had actually guessed correctly.
Seeing her reaction, Carson tugged faintly at the corner of his lips and smiled bitterly inside. His guess had indeed been right. It seemed the rumors circulating online that morning had not been baseless after all.
No wonder Yan Yichen had sought him out to assert his claim over her.
Without revealing the disappointment in his heart or the inexplicable jealousy rising within him, Carson maintained his gentle, refined smile. His deep voice sounded softly.
“Did I guess correctly?”
Meng Yier hesitated for a while, but in the end, she met his gaze directly and spoke in a quiet voice.
“Carson, I can’t accept your proposal… I’m sorry.”
After saying it, she secretly sighed. Now that the words had finally been spoken, she felt considerably more at ease.
She gazed silently at Carson, yet her heart remained uneasy. She was worried that her rejection might hurt him, and that was the last thing she wanted to see.
Although she did not love Carson, she had always admired and respected him.

If she could, she would gladly remain his devoted fan forever.
A gentle smile remained on Carson’s face. His deep eyes regarded Meng Yier thoughtfully, without the slightest ripple of emotion.
After a long while, he pressed his lips together. Then, as though he had made a momentous decision, he straightened and said seriously, “It’s all right. I respect your decision.”
His calm tone and utterly unruffled expression left Meng Yier somewhat stunned. She had thought he would at least become angry or lose his temper.
But he did neither.
Meng Yier looked at him gratefully, and the tension and apprehension in her expression eased somewhat.
Carson paused before continuing, “Little Yi, may I know why you rejected me?”
To be honest, her refusal had genuinely taken him by surprise.
At first, he had been utterly confident that he could win her love. Over the years, he had been surrounded by all kinds of beautiful women. Some had sincerely loved him, while others coveted his wealth or his status as a director. Without exception, however, they had all been eager to please him.
Meng Yier was different from them. There had always been a profound sense of distance between them—one he could never cross.

She truly was beautiful. Even compared with the actresses of the entertainment industry, she was in no way inferior. Her pure and otherworldly elegance was rarer still.
Compared with Lan Jie, she was superior in some respects.
Even though she was exceptionally beautiful, that was not why he had approached her at first. It was her eyes, and the fact that her bearing resembled Lan Jie’s so closely.
His desire to marry her had merely been an attempt to find a substitute for Lan Jie.
But after spending time with Meng Yier on several occasions, he discovered that she was unlike other women. Her simplicity, kindness, and innocence drew him in deeply, until he found himself increasingly unable to escape.
Meng Yier lowered her eyes and pondered for a moment before speaking in a sorrowful voice.
“Carson, I’m sorry. I don’t want to lie to you. I thought I could accept your proposal, but today I realized that I can’t…”
She paused, and a glimmer passed through her bright eyes.
“I’ve realized that there’s someone I like, so I can’t accept you… I’m sorry.”
Carson smiled, a trace of bitterness in his expression. In his deep, jade-green eyes, usually calm and unreadable, waves of pain began to surface.
