Meng Yier met her sharp gaze with calm confidence, her words and demeanor impeccably elegant and flawless, a perfect smile gracing her face.

Ye Zimei studied her for a moment before speaking slowly, “You graduated from Parsons School of Design?”

Meng Yier nodded. “Yes.”

Ye Zimei was slightly surprised; it was the first time she had encountered a newcomer who met her gaze so frankly—especially someone who appeared delicate and beautiful.

“Hmm… very good. Your job will be to coordinate overall styling for the artists under your charge. I’ll assign you some artists later. For now, go back and familiarize yourself with the specific tasks and procedures. If you have any questions, feel free to come to me.”

“Yes, Director Ye.”

...

Ye Zimei instructed her assistant to take Meng Yier to an empty spot in the office area, handed her a thick stack of materials, and then left.

Meng Yier had just sat down and begun leafing through the documents when her phone vibrated. Glancing at the screen, she saw it was a call from Yan Yichen.

She glanced around; every colleague was absorbed in their work. The vast office was quiet, only the soft sounds of footsteps and keyboard tapping filled the air. Everyone was orderly attending to their duties.

Feeling it would be impolite to answer a personal call in such a silent workplace, Meng Yier hung up, intending to take the call outside. However, just as she ended the call, the phone vibrated again. She hesitated, then hung up once more.

Recalling Yan Yichen’s fiery temper, she picked up the phone and rose, stepping out of the office area into a long corridor. As the phone rang again, she quickly answered.

---

“Meng Yier, what’s going on? Who gave you the nerve to hang up on me?” a cold voice erupted, full of anger, loud enough to nearly shatter her eardrums.

Meng Yier frowned and held the phone a little farther away, maintaining a safe distance.

“Speak…” he urged.

“It’s my first day at work today. Can you not cause trouble? I’ll tell you more tonight…” she soothed softly.

Suddenly, she felt as if she hadn’t gotten a boyfriend but a mother-in-law—one who watched over her every move, controlled her, and had a terrible temper.

“You went to work?” Yan Yichen’s tone was full of disbelief.

What did she take him for? She hadn’t even given him a heads-up about something so important.

Not obedient! Must be punished!

“Yes, today’s my first day. So please don’t get me fired, okay?” Meng Yier pleaded patiently. She knew well that if she didn’t ease his mind, he would torment her even more.

---

Hearing her gentle, pleading voice, a tenderness stirred in Yan Yichen’s heart, and much of his anger dissipated.

“If you lose your job, I can support you…”

Meng Yier refused decisively.

“No, I don’t want that... I want to support myself. Alright... I have to go to work now, so I’ll hang up.”

“Wait.”

Before she could end the call, Yan Yichen called after her.

Meng Yier frowned. “What is it?”

“Tell me the company address. I’ll come have lunch with you…”

His cold voice held a trace of pleasure.

“No…” Meng Yier’s eyes widened, every fiber of her being filled with resistance.
