Chapter 122: Chen Mo’s Zombie Army
"Haha, brothers, we're safe!" A four-man squad had exploited a system bug, wedging themselves into a crevice between two giant boulders. They couldn't get out, but the zombies couldn't get in.
"Only five hours left until we clear the level. Just thinking about it is exciting!"
"Those idiots, they think the more zombies they kill, the better. This instance is called 'Battle Royale'; whoever survives to the end is the real winner!"
Rumble!
Suddenly, the earth began to shake, as if a thousand armies were charging toward them.
The squad leader asked in confusion, "What’s happening? Is there an earthquake?"
The other members replied, "No way, could we be that unlucky?"
Suddenly, a figure leaped over their boulder. The figure seemed to notice something, looked back, and grinned at the people inside: "Hi! Friends! Sorry! Goodbye!"
The squad was left stunned: Who was that? Why did he say sorry to us? Could he be trying to kill us?
Rumble! A million zombies swept across the area, instantly crushing the boulders into dust.
The four-man squad was suddenly exposed to the million-strong zombie horde. They looked at each other, completely dumbfounded.
"Damn it! Run!"
Roar—
The horde didn't give them a chance. Red zombies, like thirty-year-starved terriers, rushed forward and tore into them. The four died on the spot!
Chen Mo shook his head helplessly. Along the way, he had swept through more than half the map, and the players in the instance were disappearing rapidly.
Even侯-rank experts like Nalan Xingde couldn't withstand the million-zombie army, let alone the ordinary players. Soon, there were fewer than 100 people left on the entire map, all of whom had fewer than 1,000 points. Because the zombie army would actively attack high-scoring players while pursuing Chen Mo—presumably a system setting—those with low scores had luckily escaped with their lives.
Chen Mo glanced at the leaderboard. Oh, Shangguan Chaoyue had climbed to first place. Her score was vastly different from the others; while everyone else was under 1,000, she had a staggering 20,000 points!
Shangguan Chaoyue had almost been killed by the horde, but at the critical moment, she activated a stealth ability. Even A-rank zombies couldn't locate her. She did the opposite of everyone else and fled toward the source of the horde, the S-zone, thereby evading the most dangerous wave.
Huff! Huff!
Chen Mo gasped for air. He had run across more than half the map on foot. His stamina and energy were nearly depleted, and his speed was slowing down.
The S-rank zombie, like a shy bride, trailed at the very back of the army, while the horde—like a group of bridesmaids—reached out with claws, demanding red packets from Chen Mo... no, blood packets!
Finally, Chen Mo couldn't transform into a bat, his "Wind's Blessing" speed buff was on cooldown, and his "Annihilation Demon Wings" wouldn't manifest. He had nowhere left to run. Everywhere he looked, he was surrounded by glowing, blood-red A-rank zombies. It had been difficult enough for him to kill a single A-rank zombie before; now, facing a million of them, he had zero motivation to fight. Are you kidding? That would be suicide!
It’s all this damn zombie mask’s fault! Chen Mo tried to tear the mask off, only to find it had fused completely into his skin. He couldn't remove it! Oh, shit!
Roar~ Roar~~
Circle after circle of zombies slowly closed in on him!
100 meters! 50 meters! 20 meters! 10 meters!!
It’s over! This time it’s really over! My points have reached 400,000! 400,000! Who knows how many good things I could buy with that! Am I really going to die here? Curiosity really does kill the cat. Chen Mo felt aggrieved. "Elven girl, come out! Can I abandon this quest?"
The elven girl, Meimei, couldn't appear during combat, but her voice echoed: "Master, I am sorry, you cannot abandon the quest!"
Oh, what a painful lesson! I, Chen Mo, swear that even if an SSSSS-rank item is placed right in front of me, I will never take any damn hidden quests again!
Wait! Chen Mo suddenly remembered he still had the [Demon's Wind Chime]!
He had intended to use it when he wiped out the Poppy Squad to let the demon devour the corpses and strengthen itself, but he had held back. The demon could only be summoned once a day for thirty minutes, and he had wanted to save it as a last resort.
But now, facing a million zombies, was that three-headed dog, Sanha, even useful?
Forget if it’s useful or not!
Chen Mo was about to be tackled by the jubilant zombies. Heaven knows what shameful things they would do to him—that would be too terrifying!
Jingle~
A melodious sound of wind chimes.
Chen Mo took out the [Demon's Wind Chime] and gave it a gentle shake!
Sure enough, a magic circle covered in dark patterns appeared above his head. Space tore open, and a gate to hell swung wide!
A creature poked its head out, stepped forward, and then tumbled out!
Third time! Is this Sanha really that stupid? It trips every single time it appears! Can’t it just jump down?!
Thud!
After devouring the black Zhizi energy last time, the three-headed hellhound was now half a person tall. It fell from mid-air and crashed heavily in front of the zombies.
The red zombies looked at this sudden monster and paused, seemingly confused by a creature that didn't belong in this instance.
But soon, the red zombies regained their senses. Hundreds of them swarmed toward the three-headed hellhound!
"Woof! Woof woof! Woof woof woof!" Who was the three-headed hellhound? It was a demon! A hellish demon! How could it be intimidated by these low-level zombies? It barked back at them!
Chen Mo had a row of black lines on his forehead. So embarrassing! The zombies were emitting terrifying low roars, and this Sanha was just barking like a dog!
It’s over, this time it’s really over!
Chen Mo steeled himself for death, ready to fight to the end—if he was going to die, he would die heroically.
Suddenly, Chen Mo noticed that the entire map, filled with dense, circle-upon-circle of purple dots, had gone completely still!
That's right, it was as if someone had hit a pressure point; they were all frozen!
What the hell?
Are these A-rank zombies actually afraid of a demon that’s only at the initial stage of the Soldier rank?!
Chen Mo didn't know that even the weakest demon is equivalent to an SS-rank in human terms! The hierarchy of demons is hundreds of grades higher than zombies. Zombies are merely humans infected by a virus, while demons are on the same level as gods—just with a different stance!
"Eh? Sanha, what are you doing?"
Just as Chen Mo was stunned, Sanha pounced, biting the head off a zombie. An A-rank zombie—one that had a tough pink shield and required Chen Mo to risk his life with the "Death-Bestowing Sword Qi" to kill—had its head bitten off in one snap by Sanha.
Hearing his master call him, Sanha, startled, spat out half of the zombie's head and threw it to Chen Mo, as if saying: Master? Do you want to eat, too?!!
