Chapter 48: The Beast Ning Xuan
Ning Xuan was naturally unafraid of the chubby Zhou Xiong. Her cheeks puffed up with anger as she declared, "Zhou Xiong, what do you want? Looking for a fight? I'm not scared of you! But Instructor Wei Zheng said we're not allowed to fight outside of school. Are you planning to disobey the instructor's orders?"
"Hahaha, instructor? What a joke! Their organization is called White Cloud and Fleeting Dog, just a bunch of lackeys kept by those in power. My dad is the secretary-general of Star City—why would I be afraid of some instructor?"
Chen Mo stepped forward, shielding his sister and pulling her behind him. He looked up, his eyes sharp as an eagle's, locking onto Zhou Xiong. His voice was cold as ice: "I don't care if your father is a secretary-general or even the mayor. It's a rare holiday today, and I don't want trouble. You'd best take your little gang and disappear from my sight. Otherwise, I'll make sure you spend your next life in a hospital bed!"
Zhou Xiong clutched his stomach, roaring with laughter. "Did I hear that right, guys? This loser from Class F actually wants to make us disappear! Hahaha—does he think he can act tough just because his sister is ranked first in the school?"
A scrawny youth in an A-class uniform beside Zhou Xiong, thin as a stick, chimed in obsequiously, "Don't worry, Brother Xiong. That Ning Xuan is only a mage and only knows one freezing spell with a thirty-second cooldown. There are six of us here—she can't possibly handle us!"
Another classmate in a B-class uniform, his hair parted down the middle, added confidently, "Brother Xiong, just sit back and enjoy the show. Leave this little brat to us! Heh heh, I love putting little girls in their place!"
Ning Xuan was infuriated. Her pleasant holiday, and plans to buy a pretty new dress, had been ruined by this group of trash. Waves of anger surged up inside her, awakening her other, beastlike persona.
"Roar! You all—roar! You're asking for death!"
A terrifying beastly growl rumbled forth.
Chen Mo felt a headache coming on. The thing he feared most was his sister's other personality surfacing. He was about to intervene, but Ning Xuan was faster: "Chen Mo! Stay back! I finally get to come out—let me enjoy myself! Just watch from the sidelines. Otherwise, don't blame me if I start hurting myself!"
Chen Mo remembered the first time he'd met Ning Xuan at the orphanage—her body covered in wounds, all self-inflicted. It was clear how frightening her beast persona could be.
Zhou Xiong hesitated, startled that the once-cute girl was now growling like a wild animal. But he quickly sneered, "Well, well, turns out she's a freak. Get her, boys!"
The stick-thin youth was eager. "Leave it to us, Brother Xiong! Role switch!"
A silvery light flared—no surprise from a Class A prodigy. The young man, clad in beginner gear, wielded a massive, flaming greatsword.
[Blade of Flame, D-grade superior weapon, Strength +15]
No wonder he was so cocky—he actually had a D-grade weapon.
The other students stared in envy. "Xu Yang, you’re amazing! You even got a D-grade weapon!"
Xu Yang boasted, "I got this as a reward for clearing a dungeon. With this Blade of Flame, I'm not afraid of her freezing spell at all. Come on, little brat! Aren’t you ranked first in the whole school? Let me see what you’ve got!"
Because of Ning Xuan’s warning, Chen Mo dared not step in. But his vampire cloak, claws, and mask were all at the ready. If his sister was in real danger, he would reveal his identity without hesitation and wipe out all six opponents—worst case, he'd take her and run.
"Heh heh, heh heh!" Ning Xuan lowered her head, her face dark and twisted in a strange, eerie grin. "Come on, come on! Heh heh, this damned world—let me destroy it!"
"Maniac! You're a maniac!" Xu Yang, unnerved by her jarring laugh, shouted, "Everyone, get her!"
Role switch! Arrogance set!
Bling! Bling!
Ning Xuan switched to mage mode—robe of arrogance, staff of arrogance, hat of arrogance, boots of arrogance, the entire set. Her body shone with a dazzling red light. The arrogance set, originally a D-grade blue-quality gear, radiated the scarlet glow unique to a C-grade top-tier set when fully assembled.
At that moment, Ning Xuan was no longer the playful little sister Chen Mo remembered, but a beast intent on destroying this filthy world. Chen Mo had no idea what she’d gone through before the age of five, but it must have been a shattering trauma to give birth to such a persona.
"Heh heh! Die! Freeze!"
Ning Xuan levitated, her immense spiritual power blowing away the dead leaves around her.
She raised her staff of arrogance high, aimed at Xu Yang. Instantly, white, frigid mist burst forth, coalescing into a freezing fog that shot toward him.
Freeze was a targeted spell—once locked onto its primary victim, there was no escape.
Heh!
Xu Yang gave a confident smirk. As the icy mist closed in, he suddenly grinned, self-assured.
"Ning Xuan, you're too naïve. I've studied your skills. Your freeze spell is not invincible. My Blade of Flame is your greatest nemesis!"
Flame! Blade! Wind!
Boom!
His blade erupted in fire. Xu Yang swung his greatsword in midair, sending a spinning wave of fire crashing into the oncoming frost.
Hiss! Hiss!
Ice and fire clashed, annihilating each other in a burst of steam. Both the frost and the flames vanished.
"Hahaha!" Xu Yang threw his head back in laughter. "Ning Xuan, did you see that? So much for being number one—you're nothing! Boys, get her! She's a mage without skills now—a gun without bullets is useless. But be careful not to kill her. She's Wei Zheng's favorite. If she dies, we'll all be in serious trouble!"
"Heh heh~~" Ning Xuan was utterly unafraid, her laughter growing even more twisted. "Foolish trash. Freeze!"
Buzz—
Red light blazed around her as she raised her arrogance staff again, conjuring another blast of icy energy toward Xu Yang.
Xu Yang's face contorted in horror. He swung his flaming blade in panic, but without his flame-wind skill—still on a forty-five second cooldown—he was powerless against the freezing magic.
He howled, "No! Impossible! You just used your freezing spell—I checked, it has a thirty-second cooldown! How can you cast it twice in a row? This is impossible!"
Hiss! Hiss!
The icy mist struck Xu Yang, instantly freezing him into a statue of ice.
Ning Xuan cackled triumphantly. "Heh heh, idiot, you big idiot! I've got the full arrogance set. When you have all four pieces, it triggers the arrogance effect, refreshing the cooldown of any skill below S-grade. Dumbass!"
