Volume One, Chapter 5: Flirting with Every Man She Meets
Unable to resist, she secretly glanced up. The man’s features were deep and well-defined, flawless in every way, perfectly aligned with her aesthetic.
Ah, what was she daydreaming about? He was about to get engaged, after all.
“All right...”
As soon as Meng Yanli spoke, Su Wan immediately stood up.
“Thank you, President Meng. I have to get back to work now...” Without waiting for a reply, she dashed out.
Meng Yanli’s face darkened instantly. What was that supposed to mean? Was he really that terrifying?
...
After work, heading home.
Trying to minimize her presence, Su Wan moved quietly, only wanting to get upstairs and rest.
Unexpectedly, her eldest brother called out, “Su Wan, come here for a moment.”
She raised a hand to touch the injured forehead. “I’m not feeling well. I want to go upstairs to rest.”
Hoping they would cut her some slack considering she had fainted from the injury the night before.
But showing weakness didn’t work. Her father scolded, “What’s wrong with you? Everyone’s busy with Su Mei’s wedding, and you don’t care at all...”
Su Wan frowned. “My abilities are limited. What help can I offer?”
Her stepmother sneered coldly, “You tore Mei Mei’s dress yesterday. Don’t you think you should make it up to her?”
“That dress was a gift from my grandmother. How did it become hers?”
Did this woman have no shame? She was twisting truth and lies!
Her eldest brother said coldly, “No matter what you say, since you tore the dress, you should at least make a new one to compensate our little sister!”
Su Wan was indignant. “She tore the dress herself. What does that have to do with me?”
“I didn’t!” Su Mei suddenly looked aggrieved, her eyes reddening. “Sister, you’re too much! You clearly didn’t want to give me the dress and tore it on purpose!”
Their second brother immediately went over to comfort her, patting her shoulder. “Don’t worry, little sister. We all believe you. You’re so pure and kind; there’s no way you’d falsely accuse someone.”
Pure and kind?
Su Wan’s lips twitched. Was this family blind? How could they not see such obvious things?
Even if she didn’t want her dress snatched away, she would never intentionally ruin something left by her grandmother!
Their third brother came over to persuade, “Su Wan, it’s just about helping make a dress. Just agree to it.”
This girl was too stubborn. It was such a small favor; why refuse and make the whole family uncomfortable?
“Sorry, I don’t know how to make dresses!”
This wasn’t just about a dress—it was about dignity.
Su Mei destroyed her belongings without any punishment, and now she was expected to compensate? What kind of world was this?
Their father flew into a rage, scolding, “You stubborn girl, are you trying to rebel?”
He rolled up his sleeves, looking ready to strike.
...
Su Wan pointed to her forehead coldly, “Go ahead and hit me. My company boss asked about this injury today, and he said our company has a union. If something happens to me, they won’t just stand by and watch...”
Of course, the latter part was meant to scare her father.
Her stepmother sneered, “Who are you trying to fool? Which company really cares about employees’ family matters?”
Su Wan was not to be outdone. “Fine, we’ll see about that.”
She picked up her phone. “Even if the company doesn’t care, I can call the police. You’re hitting me for no reason—wouldn’t that count as domestic abuse? If you’re not afraid of losing face, neither am I!”
“How dare you threaten us?” Her eldest brother suddenly charged over, swiping her phone out of her hand and smashing it on the ground!
He glared fiercely. “If this gets out, don’t you think it will be embarrassing?”
Su Mei hurried to pick up the phone. She tried turning it on, but it wouldn’t start.
Biting her lip, Su Wan glared angrily at her eldest brother. “You’re too much!”
Of all her brothers, her eldest was the harshest, like a sworn enemy from a past life.
What had she done to deserve this?
Zhao Lan felt uneasy. This girl was stubborn; if she really called the police, it would be trouble.
Her daughter finally had a chance to marry into a wealthy family. If this escalated, the engagement might be ruined.
So she hypocritically stepped in as a peacemaker. “Alright, we’re family. No need to be so petty. If Su Wan doesn’t want to help, fine. There are plenty of beautiful dresses from big brands. We can just buy one ourselves.”
Originally, she had hoped Su Wan’s unique design would make her daughter stand out at the engagement party.
Most importantly, it was a chance to suppress Su Wan’s fiery spirit.
Since that goal had been achieved, she was ready to call it a day.
...
On the street.
“Yanli, didn’t you say we were going to eat? What are you staring at?”
Shen Zhou was curious and glanced toward the phone shop.
“Hey, isn’t that Assistant Su?”
Meng Yanli watched as the girl lingered at the counter, asked a few questions, and then left.
He quickly pulled Shen Zhou to turn away.
Shen Zhou couldn’t help but laugh. “If I hadn’t seen it with my own eyes, I wouldn’t have believed you could do something so sneaky.”
Ignoring him, Meng Yanli strode back into the store.
“Was that girl here to buy a phone?”
The clerk nodded. “Yes, but she was asking about an older model we don’t have in stock.”
Meng Yanli pondered briefly. “Bring me the latest model.”
“Sure.”
The clerk smiled broadly—this was the first time they had encountered such a straightforward customer.
Shen Zhou teased, “You say you don’t like her, and now you’re already starting to give gifts.”
Meng Yanli replied calmly, “Don’t talk nonsense. I just worry I won’t be able to reach my assistant.”
...
Leaving the store.
He glanced at his watch. “I have something else to do. I’ll invite you to dinner another day.”
With that, he strode away.
Shen Zhou grit his teeth. “Meng Yanli, you actually value women over friends!”
Su Wan was about to enter another phone shop when someone tapped her shoulder.
Turning around, she saw Meng Yanli’s sharply defined face.
“President Meng?”
She had planned to use the dinner break to buy a phone but hadn’t found the cost-effective model she wanted.
Just as she was about to enter this store, she unexpectedly ran into her boss.
“You haven’t eaten yet, right? Come on, let’s go together.”
Su Wan was surprised by the invitation.
“Thank you for your kindness, President Meng, but I still have some things to handle...”
“There’s a nice restaurant over there. Let’s go.”
Meng Yanli seemed not to hear her and took the lead.
Su Wan hesitated for a few seconds but decided to follow.
It was a buffet restaurant.
“President Meng, what do you want to eat? I’ll get it for you.”
“Keep this for now.” The man handed her a shopping bag.
A phone?
Su Wan was stunned. “Is this... for me?”
“Yes, how can I find you if my assistant doesn’t have a phone?” The man’s reasoning sounded plausible.
She looked inside and saw it was the latest model, immediately refusing. “This is too expensive, President Meng. I can’t accept it.”
Meng Yanli frowned slightly. “Just take it. Do you want me to return it? Here’s a deal: if you feel burdened, you can pay for this meal.”
“Alright.” Su Wan nodded.
She didn’t dare refuse again. It was obvious her boss was displeased.
When reaching for the food, Su Wan and Meng Yanli’s hands both reached for the broccoli.
She blushed and quickly withdrew her hand.
“I’ll go check out something else...”
A faint smile curved Meng Yanli’s lips.
She really did blush.
Returning to the table with food, suddenly a cold voice sounded behind her.
“Hmph, really shameless, flirting with men whenever you see them!”
Su Wan looked up, stunned!
