Volume 1, Chapter 4: Worried that I might sexually harass you at work?

Beside her, Third Brother was also heartbroken and furious. “Su Wan, no matter how angry you are, you can’t do this. She is still your sister—how could you treat her like this?”
“Why bother nagging her? Someone so vicious doesn’t deserve to be our sister. If we don’t teach her a lesson today, she’ll only go further next time!”
With that, Eldest Brother raised his hand and slapped her hard across the face.
Su Wan’s world spun; a buzzing filled her head.
Overcome by anger and shock, her vision darkened, and she lost consciousness...
...
When she woke again, she was lying in a hospital bed.
By her side sat her close friend, Han Wei.
Han Wei had called Su Wan earlier that day, but it was Su Wan’s Third Brother who answered, saying she was in the hospital.
“Your family is too much. They left you alone even before you woke up. How heartless!”
Su Wan smiled bitterly.
Care for her?
If they weren’t afraid of being held responsible if she died, they probably wouldn’t have even brought her to the hospital.
Han Wei looked at her swollen face and the wound on her forehead, anger flashing in her eyes. “You should call the police. This is abuse!”
Su Wan shook her head. “Forget it. Soon enough, I’ll be leaving this family anyway.”
“But—”
Han Wei wanted to protest but stopped when she saw the tears welling in her friend’s eyes.
She knew Su Wan was soft-hearted.
No matter what, they were still family by blood. Han Wei didn’t want to escalate the matter.
...
In the CEO’s office.
Su Wan carried in a cup of coffee.
She froze for a moment when she saw a young man sitting on the sofa.
“You must be Su Wan. I’m Shen Zhou,” the man smiled, introducing himself.
Meng Yanli added, “He’s the deputy general manager at the head office.”
“Hello, Mr. Shen,” Su Wan greeted politely.
“No need for formalities. Yanli and I are friends. I heard he found himself a new assistant, so I was curious...”
Meng Yanli cleared his throat twice.
Shen Zhou chuckled, “Alright, I won’t interrupt. I’ll just go check out the company.”
His playful smile made Su Wan’s cheeks flush.
She was sure he had misunderstood her relationship with Meng Yanli.
Taking a deep breath to steady herself, she placed the coffee on the table. “Mr. Meng, if it’s not to your taste, I can make a fresh cup.”
Meng Yanli’s deep gaze fixed on her face, his expression slightly pausing. “What happened to your forehead?”
The smooth, flawless skin there was marred by a scar, hard to miss.
Su Wan blinked, instinctively touching her forehead.
“Oh, it’s nothing. I bumped it by accident.”
Meng Yanli knit his brows. “You’re my assistant now, representing the company’s image. Please be more careful in the future.”
Su Wan nodded. “Understood.”

“Mr. Meng, if there’s nothing else, I’ll leave now...”
“All right, you may go.”
No sooner had Su Wan left than Shen Zhou entered.
He grinned as he teased, “No wonder you made her your assistant. That girl is quite charming...”
They had been college classmates and bunkmates, so they spoke without much pretense.
“Don’t talk nonsense. I chose her because she has good character.”
The fact that she had helped press the elevator button without knowing his identity showed her kind nature.
“Hah, as if I believe that. I bet you’re just attracted to her looks. No wonder—you’ve been a vegetarian for so long; maybe it’s time for a change...”
“I think you should forget about your wedding too. I feel she’s better than your fiancée—much more pleasing to the eye.”
Meng Yanli rubbed his temple. “My mother likes her, and after all, she saved my life...”
He wasn’t too particular about marriage right now. If his mother approved, then so be it.
Besides, the other girl was a bit delicate but had no major flaws.
“She saved you? Just repay her with money. Why marry her?”
Meng Yanli sounded irritated. “Enough. Didn’t I ask you to keep an eye on the head office? Why are you wandering around here?”
Shen Zhou laughed. “Our big boss suddenly moved the office to a small company. Of course, I want to see who’s so charming they stole your heart, the proud and handsome man.”
“Stop talking nonsense. I’m here to boost the company’s performance!”
“Right, right. My thoughts are impure. Big boss, you’re focused on work. I shouldn’t doubt you. I was wrong. I’m going back to work properly...”
Shen Zhou chuckled as he left.
Who was he kidding? After acquiring so many companies, when had they not sent a deputy manager to oversee things?
This time, the boss himself showed up in person. If others didn’t understand, Shen Zhou certainly did.
This guy must be drunk on something other than wine!
Su Wan had just sat down when she saw Mr. Shen come out.
He approached her kindly. “Our Mr. Meng has a bit of a temper. Please be patient with him.”
She was a little confused.
As an employee, she was supposed to obey, not ask for understanding from her boss.
...
In the afternoon.
Su Wan pushed the door open.
“Mr. Meng, did you need me?”
“Sit down,” Meng Yanli gestured toward the sofa.
Su Wan hesitated. “No, thank you.”
The man’s gaze darkened. “Sit when I say sit.”
After sitting, Su Wan nervously twisted her hands together.
What was he really up to?
Was he unhappy with her work? Did he want to fire her?
“Um... Mr. Meng, if there’s anything I’m doing wrong, I can improve...”
Eager to leave her home, she couldn’t afford to lose this job at such a critical moment.
Meng Yanli took a tube of ointment from the drawer and slowly approached her.

His thin lips curled slightly. “I’m not very satisfied with your work. What assistant dares to always sulk in front of their boss...?”
Su Wan blinked. “I do smile sometimes.”
But she couldn’t just grin at the boss all day without reason—that would make her look like a lovestruck fool.
Meng Yanli snorted disdainfully. “That’s what you call a smile? Better not to smile at all.”
He looked at her. “Are you always this serious with clients?”
Su Wan hesitated. “Clients are different.”
“Then think of me as your client from now on. Be more natural.”
After a moment’s thought, Su Wan nodded. “Understood, Mr. Meng.”
She wanted to grumble silently: Does the boss have this much free time, micromanaging her expressions?
Being an assistant was even more exhausting than staying up late doing design work.
Just as she was about to say she’d leave if there was nothing else, Meng Yanli suddenly sat beside her.
“...” Startled, she scooted away a little.
Seeing her panic, a trace of mocking calm flickered in his eyes.
“What, afraid I’ll sexually harass you at work?”
Su Wan blushed, lowering her voice. “That’s not what I meant.”
The boss’s thoughts were inscrutable; anyone would be scared.
The man twisted open the ointment cap. “This medicine is good. It won’t leave scars.”
Was he going to apply it for her?
Su Wan hurriedly said, “Mr. Meng, I can do it myself.”
Meng Yanli’s expression shifted slightly. He tossed the ointment on the coffee table and said flatly, “You’re overthinking. Did you really think I’d help you?”
“Thank you for the ointment, Mr. Meng.” Su Wan prepared to get up.
But the man crossed his legs and said evenly, “Do it now. After you’re done, get back to work.”
Since the boss had spoken, what could she say?
So she quickly complied.
“Hey, move a bit to the left. No, to the right...”
The boss had become the chief supervisor.
Su Wan had never been watched so closely before, and since it was her boss, she was naturally flustered.
The next moment, her hand was caught in a warm, gentle palm.
Her heart skipped a beat, pounding wildly.
The man looked slightly annoyed. “If you dawdle like this, when will you finish? Let me do it.”
Su Wan pulled her hand away, blushing.
For some reason, every time this man got close, she remembered the day their lips accidentally touched.
His fingers were long, with slightly rough pads.
She inexplicably grew nervous, feeling as though her heart would leap out of her chest!
This feeling—
Was truly strange.
