89 Women All the Same
Long Lengyue said coldly, “Hero Xiao, why should I help you?”
Xiao Zhenfen forced a smile. “Miss Nine, isn’t this White-Clad Demoness the Long family’s sworn enemy? We are friends of the Long family, aren’t we? How can you refuse to help us?” All the while, he wondered what game this woman was playing.
Long Lengyue answered icily, “Hero Xiao, simply because I am a woman myself, how could I help you? My principle in life is never to help men bully women, even if she is my greatest enemy. So fight as you please; I will not side with anyone.”
Hearing that she meant to remain out of it and even giving such an absurd excuse, Xiao Zhenfen and Tang Mao were both shocked and furious, deeply disappointed. They thought, What in the world is this damned woman thinking? Such a perfect opportunity is right in front of her, and she is throwing it away. How could she ever kill the White-Clad Demoness on her own? But neither of them dared offend her openly; that wicked woman was not easy to provoke.
When Zhao Wuzong saw her, he too felt strangely uneasy. In the past he had pursued her and hoped she would marry him; now she was seeing the three of them join forces to besiege a woman, which was hardly a glorious scene. So he pretended not to notice and attacked Xiaoyun’er with all his strength. His blade came at Xiaoyun’er again and again, and his hatred for him was beyond words.
Because of Long Lengyue’s arrival, the White-Clad Demoness had to remain wary, which made it even harder for her to hold off the enemy. With one careless moment, she no longer had time to save Xiaoyun’er.
Then something no one expected happened. Long Lengyue flashed forward with astonishing speed, knocked Zhao Wuzong’s blade aside with one hand, and pulled Xiaoyun’er over to her side. A sweet laugh escaped her lips. “I don’t care how you fight among yourselves, but you must not hurt my man...”
What? That boy was her man. Everyone was stunned. No one could have guessed such an outcome.
When Xiaoyun’er saw Long Lengyue, he seemed to have seen a family member. At such a critical moment, he no longer cared that Bai Xuehua was present; he stepped forward and threw his arms around Long Lengyue.
With Xiaoyun’er no longer burdening her, Bai Xuehua could finally unleash her full strength, and Xiao Zhenfen, Tang Mao, and Zhao Wuzong gradually began to falter. They all understood that if this went on, the three of them would be killed or wounded by Bai Xuehua’s hand. What was that wicked Long Lengyue thinking? Wasn’t she obviously helping her own enemy?
Seeing the situation turn dangerous, Tang Mao did not have time to think. He quickly took out a Thunder Pearl and hurled it at Bai Xuehua. The Thunder Pearl was immensely powerful, and Bai Xuehua had no choice but to leap back. Seizing the chance, Xiao Zhenfen, Tang Mao, and Zhao Wuzong hurriedly fled...
The battle was over. Bai Xuehua looked at Long Lengyue standing beside Xiaoyun’er. Their expressions were both deeply complicated. At last Bai Xuehua said, “Why did you help me?”
Long Lengyue smiled. “We are both women. I have no wish to add insult to injury. As enemies, you and I will have to fight sooner or later, but I do not want that fight to be now. Today I saved only my man, so it cannot be called helping you.”
Though Bai Xuehua also knew that Long Lengyue’s relationship with Xiaoyun’er was far from ordinary, she still could not help asking, “Do you like Yun’er?”
Long Lengyue said lightly, “It is not a matter of liking. Why should I, Long Lengyue, not be allowed to have the man you, Bai Xuehua, like?”
Bai Xuehua asked in surprise, “If it is not because you like him, then what do you plan to do with Yun’er?”
Long Lengyue smiled. “I, Long Lengyue, am not one to make friends so easily.”
Then she added, “You want the best of both worlds. That is a very beautiful thought, but between us, whether in public or in private, it is hard for us to become friends. In private, I am not generous enough to place my own man in another woman’s arms; in public, because of the blood feud between our families, we are each the other’s greatest enemy and greatest threat. To settle this hatred, one side must pay with blood.”
Bai Xuehua said, “Then what do you want?”
Long Lengyue replied, “Simple. I intend to take Yun’er with me. If you think you can protect him, then come and snatch him back. Otherwise, let our grievances be settled another day.”
Though Long Lengyue’s words were icy, and the two stood on opposing sides, Bai Xuehua could still sense, as only a woman could, a strange tacit understanding between them. What exactly did it contain? Only time would tell. Was it merely respect between rivals, or was something else hidden beneath it?
Long Lengyue taking Yun’er away was not necessarily a bad thing for Bai Xuehua, either. Bai Xuehua had too many enemies and too many things to do; she did not have the energy to protect Xiaoyun’er for long. Long Lengyue was different. As a member of the Long family, she had fewer enemies in the Central Plains, and Xiaoyun’er would be safer with her than with Bai Xuehua herself.
As for Bai Xuehua’s feelings toward Xiaoyun’er...
With that, Xiaoyun’er took out a copper coin and said, “Heads, I’ll go with Sister Xue; tails, I’ll go with Sister Yue.”
