“Done.” Jiang Chen handed the phone back, leaving Glaze and Shen Huaizhu staring at him in shock.

Glaze’s little mouth fell open. Tilting her head, she said incredulously, “That can’t be right. My father was so stubborn just a moment ago. How did he suddenly give in?”

Shen Huaizhu said nothing, but he had already figured out part of it.

The reason their master had yielded so easily was undoubtedly the title of Sect Master of Mount Longhu. Yet what mattered most about that title was not the title itself, but the strength that ought to stand behind it.

The truth was obvious: their abilities were insignificant before their master, Lin Jianxin. But Jiang Chen was different. This was tantamount to an admission that with Jiang Chen there, they would not be in any great danger.

She had originally thought that Jiang Chen was merely stronger than they were, but not by much. Now, however, it seemed that the more she learned about him, the more mysterious he became. The secrets he carried went far beyond this.

Glaze sat down and ate gloomily. “One day, I’ll make my father look at me in a new light!”

Li Changsheng laughed. “You’re brilliant, and you possess the bearing of an immortal. Your future is limitless!”

Jiang Chen could hardly bear to watch him. He voiced his own thoughts instead. “Our Azure Cloud Sword Sect has also received a mission concerning the Dragon Vein. It affects many different matters, so Changsheng and I will take the lead this time. You two will provide support.”

Glaze shook her wrist. “We’re strong too, you know.”

Jiang Chen said nothing and quietly continued eating. “This steak is awfully tough.”

Li Changsheng nodded. “Yeah. My rice is pretty tough too.”

Glaze puffed out her cheeks. “Senior Sister, look at the two of them!”

Shen Huaizhu scratched her head. “Ahem. Eat your food. Eat.”

By the end of the meal, Glaze had exhausted every bit of anger she was capable of feeling.

Still, the thought of traveling with them to uphold justice made her feel that it was completely worth it!

Guarding the Dragon Vein could not be delayed, so after they finished eating, Li Changsheng obtained an off-road vehicle from the local branch.

Since only Jiang Chen and Li Changsheng knew how to drive, the two of them took turns behind the wheel. Lingqin lay to the north, so they would have to pass through Qing City along the way.

Of course, they would merely pass by the outskirts and would not enter the city.

Li Changsheng drove through the first half of the night, while Jiang Chen took over for the second half. At first, the two girls chattered and laughed together, but once they had covered half the distance, they were both unbearably sleepy—yet unable to sleep.

They had originally planned to fly, but the fog above Lingqin had been extremely dense lately. Since the distance was not particularly great, they chose to take an off-road vehicle instead. It would also keep them more inconspicuous. After all, spies from the island nation might very well discover their route, leaving them at a serious disadvantage.

Although Glaze was a pampered treasure of the Azure Cloud Sword Sect, she had never once complained. She was even willing to take the initiative and do whatever was within her power. Jiang Chen could not help marveling at Li Changsheng’s excellent taste in women.

With the two of them taking turns driving, they still made good time and soon reached the Lingqin region.

The moment they entered the area, however, even the headlights of their vehicle could not pierce the thick fog. The mist was so dense that they could only inch forward along the Lingqin Highway, moving even more slowly than a person walking.

“Seriously, what are those islanders trying to do? How can there be fog this thick? Have they gone mad?” Li Changsheng’s palms were slick with sweat. He absolutely refused to believe that nothing would happen in fog of this magnitude. Otherwise, there would have been no reason for the Lingqin region to become like this.

“The island nation has always been narrow-minded,” Shen Huaizhu said angrily. “If we weren’t tied up with matters here, we would have gone over there and settled the score with them long ago.”

Jiang Chen said, “Slow down. We should reach the town after another stretch of road.”

At the foot of the mountains in the Lingqin region stood a small town called Sha Family Town. Cultivators had once been stationed there as well. If the cultivators guarding the Dragon Vein had not suddenly disappeared, they would never have come here.

The off-road vehicle proceeded at the slowest speed in its history. Jiang Chen watched the dense fog all the way, occasionally examining the thickness of the mist in his hand. He had learned this technique from Lin Mo, though it could only be used to trace the fog if one first found its source.

“Wait… stop the car first!” Jiang Chen suddenly called out.

“What is it?” Li Changsheng asked.

“Shh.” Jiang Chen quietly pointed outside.

All at once, a fierce wind began howling through the fog, whipping the entire mass of mist into chaos.

A piercing suona melody traveled through the fog, shaking the group’s eardrums until they ached.

“There are evil, yin creatures at work,” Jiang Chen said.

Because of everything surrounding the Dragon Vein, Li Changsheng was already furious. His abundant vital energy alone could scatter who knew how many yin creatures.

“Damn it! They don’t show up early or late, but choose now—when I’m on my way to save someone—to come crawling out! Wait here. I’m going to chop them down!” Li Changsheng was about to leave the vehicle, but Glaze caught him by the sleeve.

“Wait. Let’s see what they’re trying to do,” Glaze said.

The anger that had just flared up was immediately suppressed by Glaze.

There was no denying that Glaze had quite a way with Li Changsheng.

The suona melody rose gradually. Jiang Chen used a talisman to cancel out the noise outside, and only then did the others feel somewhat better.

Before long, a tall horse emerged from the dense fog. It stood more than two meters high and looked enormous.

Yet there was something strange about it. Its eyes were vacant, like those of a paper horse, and its movements were utterly mechanical. It was not merely odd—it was deeply eerie.

“Is this a wedding? Who would get married on a day like this?” Shen Huaizhu muttered.

Soon, the groom atop the tall horse revealed his head.

He wore a red-and-black scholar’s cap. His face was covered in thick black hair. He looked somewhat like a monkey, yet not quite one. He stood nearly two meters tall, and even while mounted on the great horse, the sheer size of his body was unmistakable.

“What in the world is that thing?” Li Changsheng asked, baffled.

He was widely experienced, but this creature clearly lay beyond the limits of his knowledge. He could not begin to guess what it was, so he turned to Jiang Chen.

Jiang Chen, however, remained silent.

The humanoid creature riding the tall horse was dressed in red wedding robes.

As the fog before their vehicle slowly dispersed, they finally saw that the creatures playing the suonas were not human at all!

“Holy crap—paper figures?!”

Two perfectly orderly rows of sixteen paper figures played the suonas. Their faces were deathly pale, with horrifying circles of rouge painted across their cheeks.

Behind them, at a bend in the road, four burly paper figures carried a red sedan chair. It was clearly made of paper as well. There did not seem to be a single living person anywhere in the procession.

“Brother Jiang Chen… what kind of ghostly thing is this?” Glaze asked fearfully.

Jiang Chen slowly said, “A Mountain Spirit’s Wedding.”
