Near noon, Betty Ross finally opened her eyes. For a moment, she felt disoriented, but her body was exhausted, aching and numb all over.

“You’re finally awake. I thought you’d sleep until afternoon. There’s milk by the bed—drink some to regain your strength,” Kahn suggested kindly. Last night’s exertion had been normal for him, but not for Betty.

From the bed to the balcony, from the balcony to the bathroom, then to the bedroom door, and even the wardrobe; halfway through, feeling thirsty, she made a trip to the wine cabinet, then back again. It was an immense amount of activity. The fact that Betty only slept a few extra hours spoke to her remarkable constitution.

Her long legs clad in tight black stockings had been irresistibly alluring last night. It seemed Betty had trained herself, so Kahn had chosen some more challenging positions.

Betty still felt a bit dazed upon waking, but she followed Kahn’s words and drank the milk left on the bedside table. With something in her stomach, she felt a bit more alive. Although she’d eaten a little the previous night, it was far too little, and all of it had been burned away by their exertion.

“What did I even do last night…” Betty pressed a hand to her forehead, cursing herself. Alcohol was truly a menace. She had a boyfriend, and their intimacy had never gone beyond hugs and kisses, yet now she had given herself away. Becoming Kahn’s personal assistant was never meant to be a ploy to seduce a wealthy man.

“I have a boyfriend, you know.” Upon hearing this, Kahn was slightly surprised. Then, noticing the red marks on the bed, he felt a pang of guilt and said, “Miss Betty, I didn’t realize… but last night, emotions just got the better of us all…”

Betty understood the situation as well. She was more frustrated than hysterical.

“Alright, let’s just put last night behind us. Mr. Kahn, may I see the current progress on the Despair Virus research?” With the alcohol in her system dissipated, Betty realized she’d probably exposed herself. She’d been so drunk last night, babbling incoherently. Not only had she failed to obtain any project intelligence, but she had ended up compromising herself.

“This is part of the research progress and experimental data—not the core, but enough to demonstrate the value of the project. Miss Betty, I’d like to collaborate with your father. General Ross, who is dedicated to super soldier research, should find this project very interesting.”

Kahn spoke Betty’s background out loud. He had already looked into her, and to his surprise, Betty hadn’t really tried to hide it.

“I think General Ross and I will have a lot to discuss. I’ll need you to connect us, Miss Betty.”

After reviewing the progress and data Kahn handed her, Betty—while finding no explicit revelations—could, with her expertise, discern quite a bit.

“Boss Kahn, you knew about my background all along?”

“Did you ever try to hide it, Miss Betty?” Kahn shrugged helplessly. His retort left Betty speechless. After reading the non-core research data, she was eager to see more, but she knew he wouldn’t show her anything further unless she could persuade her father.

“You really are a devious boss…” Betty grumbled, feeling a bit sulky. She rose from the bed, only to find that all her clothes had been torn to shreds the previous night—not a single one was wearable.

Fortunately, Kahn had prepared a new set for her. After showering in the bathroom, she put on the clothes he’d given her. They were nearly identical to yesterday’s. Noticing the black stockings on her legs, Betty felt more certain her boss had a particular taste—otherwise, there was no reason to buy so many similar outfits.

Dressed but still weak, Betty allowed herself to be persuaded to stay for a sumptuous lunch. There were no encore performances; though Kahn could have managed, Betty was absolutely spent, even if she had enjoyed it.

After lunch, Betty left, not forgetting to take the project progress and data Kahn had given her—vital materials to convince her father.

...

“Instructor Lees, are you ready?”

That afternoon, after arriving at the biological research center, Kahn went directly to Lees. Once Kahn was inside the secure laboratory, Lees retrieved a freshly prepared serum from a locked cabinet. “Mr. Kahn, this is the fusion serum from those two cell lines. To be honest, while the data and tests have all been quite successful, I still recommend—”

“Do it here, Lees. I’m sure you’ve guessed as much, but please keep this confidential.” At that moment, another Kahn walked in—it was his shadow clone. Though he trusted Lees, Kahn still preferred to let his clone keep watch, just in case.

Seeing two Kahns and hearing his words, Lees gulped nervously. Pointing to the experimental bed, he said with a trembling voice, “Best if you inject it there, Mr. Kahn. That way, we can monitor the data directly…”

The bed had been intended for recording error data, but Lees never expected the boss himself would volunteer as a subject.

“Don’t worry, Lees. I trust your research—it’ll be fine.” Kahn reassured him, took off his shirt, and lay down on the bed.

“For my daughter!” Lees silently steeled himself, loaded the fusion serum into the syringe, secured Kahn to the bed, and attached monitoring equipment, ready to record everything in detail.

“Mr. Kahn, I’m about to begin.” Kahn made a gesture. “Go ahead, Lees.”

With the grim-faced shadow clone watching, Lees didn’t feel bold at all. He checked every instrument carefully, exchanged a glance with Kahn, and finally pressed the injection button.

As the serum entered his body, Kahn felt changes begin. His eyes turned red, and the veins beneath his skin glowed with a fiery light—signs that the Despair Virus was beginning to repair his body.

What surprised Kahn was that, unlike last time, he didn’t feel pain. Instead, his whole body tingled, as if he were about to shed his skin.

“The data is excellent, just as predicted, Mr. Kahn,” Lees reported. He quickly began infusing Kahn with glucose and nutrients to support the transformation.

Twenty minutes later, dead skin began peeling from Kahn’s body, but he felt increasingly well—just a bit empty, as if he hadn’t eaten in days.

Another half hour passed, and once Kahn’s vital signs stabilized, Lees asked, “Mr. Kahn, the injection is complete. How do you feel?” He also released the metal restraints.

Sitting up, Kahn nearly collapsed from weakness. The transformation felt amazing, but he was drained, and all the dead skin made him uncomfortable.

His shadow clone and Lees came to his aid, helping him up and handing him high-calorie food.

“Mr. Kahn, the initial results are excellent. You need to recover your strength before cleaning up.”

Kahn didn’t say much more. He quickly devoured the food, regained some strength, and went to the laboratory’s shower to wash off the dead skin.

But freshly transformed, he hadn’t yet mastered his new strength. A light push broke the metal door—over ten millimeters thick and weighing a ton.

“This door’s too flimsy. Replace it tomorrow,” he said.

Lees nodded in shock. “Yes, Mr. Kahn.”

After cleaning himself up, Kahn didn’t linger at the lab. He handed Lees a pre-written check for one million dollars and left.

Before leaving, he instructed Lees to back up his experimental data for him, then delete everything else. The experiment would be suspended for now; if needed, he would restart it. Lees and his team were given a few days off.

No one else knew the reason, and Lees wasn’t about to talk.

...

Kahn went straight home, ordered a feast to fill himself, then began training to control his strength.

He could feel that he was much stronger than before—he’d need practice before going out. He felt he could flip a car with ease and throw it far; if he didn’t rein in his strength, even a trip to the street would be a problem.

Then there was magic. This time, Kahn felt something had changed in his body, though he wasn’t sure if it was related to magical power.

He pulled out a spell book he’d brought back from the world of Harry Potter, along with a video of Kettell teaching Hermione. He had prepared well in advance to study magic.

“Wingardium Leviosa!”

The first time he cast a spell, Kahn felt a strange power surge within him. Unable to control it, he blew a massive hole in the floor.

“This… is magic. I can use it—it just needs control…”

Kahn was delighted as he recalled the sensation. The first time, he hadn’t even tried to control it, but thinking back, if he’d focused on the flow, it would have been easy.

“Wingardium Leviosa!”

The second time, with control, the vase before him floated gently into the air.

“I did it!”

Kahn laughed. He could use magic now, and the magical energy within him was immense—a force welling up from his very blood, easy to command.

It must be the influence of the phoenix and fire dragon—now, Kahn felt the magic inside him was vast, and seemed to have other uses.

He relaxed his focus and let the magic flow to his throat, then spat it out in one breath.

Boom!

A scorching, powerful jet of fire burst from Kahn’s mouth, instantly setting a wall ablaze!

“Shit!”

Seeing this, Kahn cursed and dashed for the fire extinguisher.
