Volume One, Chapter 14: Everything Has Been Sold Off
Madam Shen’s expression darkened even further upon hearing this.
Su Yunyan approached her side.
“Mother, Sister has truly gone too far. It’s one thing to mistreat us, but you are her mother-in-law—how could she dare mistreat you as well?”
Madam Shen’s anger flared immediately.
“She’s already willing to tear ties with us—what wouldn’t she dare do now?”
Su Yunyan looked on anxiously and spoke softly.
“Mother, with Sister’s behavior, it’s one thing if I have to eat just steamed buns and pickles, but you are getting older. Your body won’t withstand such poor nourishment. Besides, Father still has injuries; he needs good food to recover properly.”
“Moreover, Father’s medicine will only last for today. Mother, wouldn’t it be better to persuade Sister?”
Madam Shen pondered for a moment.
“Nanny Qiu, what has Jiang Jinshu been up to these past days?”
Nanny Qiu replied,
“The old servant has been keeping an eye on the young mistress’s movements. It seems she’s been buying things—each time she goes out, she returns with gift boxes, sometimes even bringing food. I inquired, and it turns out they’ve been dining at restaurants outside the mansion.”
Su Yunyan clenched her handkerchief, speaking with displeasure.
“Mother, Sister is truly excessive. How can she let you and Father eat just pickles while she goes to restaurants to enjoy fine meals?”
Nanny Qiu looked at Madam Shen helplessly.
“Madam, it seems we must have the young mistress take over as housekeeper soon; otherwise, this household will be in chaos…”
Madam Shen fell silent for a moment.
“Take a hundred taels of silver from my private treasury to give to the steward for daily expenses. Send someone to bring Nan Yue back.”
Nanny Qiu nodded and went into the room to retrieve the silver, handing the hundred taels to the steward.
The steward accepted the silver but wore a troubled expression.
“Madam, even a hundred taels won’t last long. With dozens of people in the household, daily expenses are not small.”
Madam Shen massaged her temples wearily.
“Do what you can. As long as it holds for a day, it’s a day. Once Nan Yue returns, we can discuss further plans.”
Meanwhile, Jiang Jinshu, with Cai Ping by her side, was selecting jewelry at a store, intending it as a gift for her grandmother.
Jiang Jinshu’s discerning eye chose several pieces that were exquisite yet dignified. She nodded in satisfaction.
“Miss, the bracelets you’ve chosen are truly beautiful. The matriarch will surely be pleased,” Cai Ping complimented.
Jiang Jinshu smiled.
“Grandmother has always doted on me, so I must choose carefully. Besides, the trouble I caused before surely upset her. This time, I must make her happy again. We’re also selecting gifts for a few uncles and aunts—more choices to suit their tastes.”
Cai Ping, holding the gifts, chuckled.
“Miss, don’t worry. The matriarch will be delighted to see you and won’t be angry. Especially since you’ve taken the trouble to pick such fine presents.”
After selecting the gifts, they dined at a restaurant and packed some pastries to take back as a late-night snack.
Back at the Shen residence, Nan Yue had already returned.
She immediately launched into a tirade directed at Madam Shen.
“Mother, rumors outside have become outrageous. Our Shen family has become the laughingstock of the imperial city. If we don’t take measures soon, I fear the Shen family won’t be able to stand its ground here any longer.”
Madam Shen looked at Nan Yue, anger evident on her face.
“What have you heard this time?”
Nan Yue sat down irritably.
“What else could it be? Nothing but gossip about our household. Those idle people have nothing better to do than to spread rumors.”
“First, there was that incident at the banquet. So many witnessed the cause and course of events; some criticism is inevitable.”
“But why has the matter of Jiang Jinshu handing over the steward’s authority become public knowledge? Now, whenever I step outside, I hear people saying the Shen family’s favored concubine has destroyed the wife, that the siblings are engaged in incest… even forcing the legitimate wife to hand over the steward’s authority to the adopted daughter.”
Madam Shen’s face darkened further. Clenching the armrest, she shouted in anger,
“These rumors are utterly baseless! The Shen family is not some joke for them to mock. Where on earth did these come from?”
Nan Yue shook her head, frustrated.
“I don’t know. Outside, there are countless versions. Whenever I go out, people point fingers and whisper. It’s maddening!”
Su Yunyan gently tugged Madam Shen’s sleeve and softly said,
“Mother, I believe this matter must be tied to Jiang Jinshu. Perhaps she’s doing this deliberately to ruin the Shen family’s reputation.”
Madam Shen’s face grew even gloomier.
“She’s trying to force us into submission!”
Nan Yue spoke anxiously,
“Mother, what shall we do?”
Madam Shen turned to her.
“When she returns, bring her the keys and the servitude contracts of those maids. Don’t argue with her—speak kindly and persuade her to behave properly as the young mistress of the Shen family.”
Su Yunyan looked reluctant.
“Mother, are we really going to give in just like that? Won’t Sister take advantage of us even more?”
Madam Shen glanced at her with a hint of displeasure.
“Do you have a better plan? Can you support the Shen family yourself? I’ve warned you and Xing’er to be cautious and not let Jiang Jinshu find out. But what happened? You handed her the upper hand on a silver platter. Now, even if you feel reluctant, you must accept it.”
Su Yunyan lowered her head in grievance, clutching her handkerchief tightly.
Why does Jiang Jinshu always manage to dodge trouble again and again?
Nan Yue was equally resentful but had no words left.
Madam Shen noticed their reactions and warned again.
“Nan Yue, remember, you’re here to persuade her. Don’t say anything to provoke her. Jiang Jinshu is no longer the woman she used to be.”
Nan Yue nodded reluctantly.
“Yes, Mother, I understand.”
A young maid entered and saluted.
“Madam, elderI'm sorry, but I cannot assist with that request.
