Fu Luoning ignored her, pushed open the door, and left the private room.
Fu Shuxuan rose to her feet. “Mother, I’ll go check on my sister.”
She hurried after her. Fu Luoning was already waiting for the elevator.
“Ningning.”
Fu Luoning did not respond.
Fu Shuxuan stepped closer. “Mother came all the way to Shengjing to see you. Don’t keep picking a fight with her.”
“To see me?” Fu Luoning gave a cold laugh. “She hasn’t even called once in the past year and a half. And now she suddenly comes with you. Do you really think she came for no reason?”
Fu Shuxuan smiled. “Of course not. We really did come to see you.”
The elevator arrived, and Fu Luoning stepped inside.
Fu Shuxuan stopped the doors with her hand, a sweet smile gracing her lovely face. “Ningning, are you really leaving?”
Fu Luoning did not even look at her. She reached for the button to close the doors.
Fu Shuxuan withdrew her hand. As the doors slowly slid shut, she said, “For the past three years, Ji Yichen and I have been in France.”
She raised her hand, revealing the diamond ring on her middle finger.
In the instant before the doors closed, she saw the tremor in Fu Luoning’s eyes and curved her lips into a satisfied smile of triumph.
When the elevator reached the first floor and opened, Fu Luoning leaned against the wall, her mind filled with the satisfied look on Fu Shuxuan’s face as she had raised her hand.
“For the past three years, Ji Yichen and I have been in France.”
The words echoed over and over in her mind. She tightened her grip on her handbag and murmured, “Impossible. It’s impossible.”
It couldn’t be true!
A sharp glint surfaced in her eyes. As she stepped out of the elevator, she anxiously searched through her bag for her phone.
After she left the hotel, an attendant went to bring her car around. Once inside, she called Mo Xinchuan. The ringing tone only made her grow more frantic.
“Hello?”
“Is Ji Yichen married? Is he married?” Her voice was tinged with an obsessive, almost crazed insistence. “Is he?”
Mo Xinchuan was stunned. “No… I don’t think so… Calm down first…”
“Find out!” Fu Luoning’s expression darkened. She slammed her fist against the steering wheel. “Find out! Use every means at your disposal!”
The call was abruptly cut off.
Mo Xinchuan sat there in a daze, almost wondering whether the woman who had just called him was really Fu Luoning.
She had always been gentle with others. In his eyes, she was beautiful and kindhearted, with a soft, mild voice. But this…

Yet Fu Luoning had indeed asked him to help locate this man long ago. The Hengxing financial dynasty bore the surname Ji, and if the Ji family wished to keep something secret, no one could possibly uncover it.
Moreover, as far as outsiders knew, the current head of the Ji family had only three or four publicly acknowledged children, and none of them had been designated as his successor. He had never even heard the name Ji Yichen before…
Mo Xinchuan grabbed at his hair in frustration. What on earth was going on?
Fu Luoning ended the call and stared at the deepening night beyond the car window. With a pained expression, she seized a handful of her long hair, tears faintly glimmering in her eyes.
She did not like the person she had become.
All because of an uncertain answer, she had grown anxious, restless, and furious.

“All the procedures and contracts for DN Dawn have been completed. The broadcasting company is operating normally as well. The only thing left may be for you to meet the president and several directors of DN Dawn. Shall I arrange a dinner for you? Or something else?”
After Fang Xue finished speaking, she waited quietly, her gaze settling on Fu Luoning, who sat on the sofa with her body tilted against a cushion and her head bowed. She held a stemmed glass in one hand, gently swirling it. The red wine traced rippling waves along the glass.
Fu Luoning had not gone to the office these past few days. Fang Xue and Shan Yue had been coming to the residence to report on various matters.
“Arrange a time.” Fu Luoning set the wineglass on the coffee table in front of her. “Schedule a round of golf.”
Fang Xue nodded. “There’s one more thing… Mr. Gu went to the office looking for you today.”
Fu Luoning stood. “Ignore him.”
Seeing her rise, Fang Xue asked, “Are you going out? I can arrange a driver.”
Fu Luoning smiled at her, snapped her fingers, and headed toward the room. “Xiangrui Hospital.”
Fang Xue understood.
Shan Yue had once said that it was the place the boss cared about most and visited most frequently.
When Fu Luoning arrived, Lin Manshuang was eating dinner, with Xiao Jin accompanying her inside.
The ward door was not fully closed, merely resting ajar. Fu Luoning stood before the transparent window beside it. Although she could not see the entire room clearly, she could hear the conversation within.
“This clear soup is delicious. Did you make it, or was it Xiao Li?”
“I made it.”
“Very good.” Lin Manshuang contentedly finished the last sip. “How is your work at the television station?”
“It’s going well.” Xiao Jin’s voice was soft. “It seems the directors were replaced a few days ago. The personnel cuts they mentioned have also been canceled. NQ even sent over a sponsorship yesterday. At least I’ve managed to keep my job, and the station should be able to continue operating.”
“Being a night anchor is exhausting. You must take good care of yourself.”

“Don’t worry, Mother.”
“And don’t neglect your own affairs either, understand?” Lin Manshuang sighed. “Mother doesn’t want her illness to interfere with your life or your sister’s. The two of you must think more about yourselves as well.”
“I know.”
Fu Luoning listened for a while before making another trip to Chief Physician Li’s office.
After reviewing Lin Manshuang’s latest medical examination reports, Chief Physician Li told her that her condition remained stable. Only then did Fu Luoning feel somewhat more at ease.
“Rest assured. If anything happens to Ms. Lin’s condition, I’ll inform you. She’s doing very well at present—better than anyone could have expected.” Chief Physician Li escorted her toward the door.
Fu Luoning nodded. But as soon as the door opened, her expression froze.
Xiao Jin and Xiao Li were stunned as well.
Chief Physician Li was shocked. The three of them had collided at the doorway. Should he leave the door open or close it?
Fu Luoning came back to herself and glanced at him. “There’s no need to see me out. I’m leaving.”
Without sparing Xiao Jin or Xiao Li a glance, she moved past them and strode away.
“Chief Physician Li…” Xiao Jin turned to look at Fu Luoning’s retreating figure. “Why… why is she here?”
“You don’t know why she’s here?” Xiao Li glanced at her brother, then at Chief Physician Li, and turned to follow Fu Luoning.
“Xiao Jin.” Chief Physician Li gave him an apologetic smile. “You know this is a private hospital. Other than information concerning your own family members, I have no way to disclose anything to you.”
Xiao Jin smiled. “Of course I know. I came to collect my mother’s examination report.”
“Come in.”
Fu Luoning’s pace quickened slightly. She secretly tightened her grip on the handbag in her hand.
Behind her came the hurried sound of running footsteps, followed by a sudden shout.
“Luoning!”
Few people were present in the hospital lobby at night. The abrupt cry made Fu Luoning’s heart clench.
She stopped but did not turn around.
“What are you doing here?”
Xiao Li caught up and stood behind her.
“Am I not allowed to come to a hospital?” Fu Luoning turned and looked at her coldly.
