Chapter Two: Secrets of the Ancient Village
After their harrowing escape from the ancient tomb, the members of the tomb-raiding gang were like startled birds, shaken and uneasy. They paused for a brief regroup in the forest, then quickly decided to return to the nearby town. Along the way, silence reigned; exhaustion and fear were etched into every face.
Arriving at the town, they found a secluded inn and settled in. Lin Yu sat alone in his room, replaying the events in the tomb, unable to calm his restless heart. Though they had survived this ordeal for now, he knew the story was far from over. There seemed to be an enormous secret hidden behind the tomb, one that might draw forth even greater dangers.
A sudden knocking interrupted Lin Yu’s thoughts. He rose and opened the door to find Li Yang standing outside.
“Come in and sit,” Lin Yu invited, gesturing for Li Yang to enter.
Li Yang took a seat, gazing at Lin Yu with solemn intensity. “Zhang Yu, this trip to the tomb was far too strange. Don’t you think everything was a bit… unnatural?”
Lin Yu nodded. “I felt it too. The traps in this tomb were unlike any we’ve encountered before, and that black smoke—it could turn a person to bones in an instant. It was terrifying.”
Li Yang pondered for a moment. “I keep thinking about the murals. They offered us some clues, but it feels like many crucial details were hidden. Maybe this tomb isn’t as it appears—perhaps it’s tied to some ancient legend or secretive organization.”
Lin Yu’s mind stirred; he recalled rumors from his previous life in the tomb-raiding circles about mysterious organizations. It was said such groups guarded secrets unknown to the world, and anyone who tried to uncover them would face brutal retribution. Could the events surrounding the tomb be connected to these secret organizations?
“Li Yang, have you ever heard anything about connections between secret organizations and ancient tombs?” Lin Yu asked cautiously.
Li Yang furrowed his brow. “I’ve heard some rumors, but most are vague and elusive. Still, after what we’ve experienced, maybe those stories aren’t without merit. I plan to stay here and dig deeper into the town’s history. Maybe I’ll find something useful. What about you?”
Lin Yu thought for a moment. “I’ll stay as well. Everyone’s too shaken to risk another tomb raid anytime soon. I want to uncover what’s truly hidden behind all this.”
The next day, Lin Yu and Li Yang began seeking information around the town. They visited local elders, hoping for clues about the tomb. Most were evasive, speaking in hushed tones and warning them not to approach the tomb, calling it a place of ill omen.
It was not until evening, in a teahouse, that they met an elderly man named Grandpa Chen. Though well past seventy, his spirit was lively. When Lin Yu and Li Yang asked about the tomb, a peculiar glint flashed in his eyes.
“You young men, why are you interested in that tomb? Don’t you know how dangerous it is?” Grandpa Chen set down his teacup, speaking slowly.
Lin Yu hurried to reassure him. “Grandpa, it’s just curiosity. Could you tell us about the tomb? We promise not to risk ourselves recklessly.”
Grandpa Chen sighed. “Since you want to hear it, I’ll tell you. That tomb has been here for ages—long before this town was founded. The elders used to say it was built by an ancient emperor to hide an immensely important treasure. This treasure possessed mysterious powers, enough to alter the fate of the world.”
“A mysterious treasure?” Lin Yu and Li Yang exchanged astonished glances.
Grandpa Chen continued, “To protect it, the emperor summoned the most skilled geomancers and craftsmen to install countless traps within the tomb. He also formed a secret guard to watch over it through generations. As dynasties changed, the guard faded into history, but the tomb’s secret endured.”
“So why are people in town so wary of the tomb?” Li Yang asked.
Grandpa Chen frowned. “Because many tried to enter and search for the treasure, but none ever returned. Over time, people believed the tomb was cursed and that all who entered would be punished. Strange phenomena occur near the tomb—eerie cries at night, mysterious flickers of light—enough to chill the blood.”
Lin Yu’s heart raced. He suspected these phenomena were closely tied to the tomb’s secret, perhaps left as warnings by its guardians.
“Grandpa, do you know anything more about the secret guard? Did they leave behind any clues or legacy?” Lin Yu asked eagerly.
Grandpa Chen shook his head. “It was all so long ago. I don’t know much. But to the east of town lies an abandoned old village. It’s said that the guard once lived there. Maybe you’ll find something useful. But that village is strange—odd things happen there. If you go, be careful.”
After thanking Grandpa Chen, Lin Yu and Li Yang decided to venture to the abandoned village the next day.
Early in the morning, they packed their gear and headed east. The path was rugged, and the surrounding woods were unusually silent and foreboding.
When they finally reached the village, they were stunned by what they saw. The entire place was in ruins, most houses collapsed, only a few crumbling walls left. The air was thick with decay and wild grass, as if time itself had forgotten the place.
“It’s been abandoned for a long time,” Li Yang remarked, gazing at the scene.
Lin Yu nodded. “Let’s split up and search. Maybe we’ll find something related to the tomb or the secret guard.”
They began combing through the village. In a dilapidated house, Lin Yu found fragments of ancient pottery, etched with strange symbols. Studying them, he realized they resembled the runes on the tomb’s stone gate.
“Li Yang, come look at this!” Lin Yu called out, excited.
Li Yang hurried over, his eyes lighting up as he saw the symbols. “These might be ancient script. Perhaps they can help us unravel more secrets of the tomb.”
Suddenly, an eerie laughter echoed through the empty village, chilling them to the bone.
Lin Yu and Li Yang looked around nervously, but saw no one.
“Who’s there?” Li Yang shouted.
Only the sinister laughter and the whistling wind replied.
“Careful, there may be danger here,” Lin Yu cautioned, gripping his weapon tightly.
Back to back, they moved cautiously through the village. Suddenly, Lin Yu felt something underfoot. Looking down, he saw a loose stone slab.
Before he could react, the slab flipped open, revealing a dark hole. A pungent odor wafted up, making them dizzy.
“Quick, get back!” Li Yang pulled Lin Yu away.
As they retreated, several enormous spiders crawled out of the hole. Their bodies were covered in black hair, green eyes glowing frightfully.
“What are these?” Lin Yu cried in alarm.
Li Yang drew a dagger from his backpack. “Don’t panic. They look terrifying, but being underground so long, their eyesight must be poor. Let’s back away slowly and find a way out.”
But the spiders, sensing their presence, began crawling toward them. Lin Yu and Li Yang fought fiercely, wielding their weapons.
During the battle, Lin Yu discovered their weakness was in the head. Seizing his chance, he stabbed a spider in its head; it shrieked and convulsed, dying.
Li Yang was equally relentless, stabbing several spiders to death. After a hard-fought struggle, they finally escaped the spiders’ attack.
“Finally, we’re rid of them,” Li Yang wiped sweat from his brow.
Lin Yu looked at the dark hole. “There may be more secrets down there. Should we check it out?”
Li Yang hesitated. “It’s dangerous, but it could be our only way to find clues. We’d better prepare thoroughly.”
They reorganized their gear and cautiously approached the hole. Descending the ladder, they found themselves in a vast underground chamber. Old chests and weapons racks lay scattered about, faded portraits hung on the walls.
Lin Yu pried open a chest, finding it filled with gold and jewels. Yet, he was unmoved by the riches, continuing his search for clues.
Li Yang examined the portraits closely. They depicted ancient battles and mysterious rituals. On one painting, he spotted a familiar emblem—a circular design with an eye-like symbol in the center. It matched the markings they had seen in the tomb.
“Lin Yu, come look at this!” Li Yang pointed to the emblem.
Lin Yu approached, his heart stirred. “This might be the emblem of the secret guard. Perhaps these paintings record their history of guarding the tomb.”
As they prepared to study the paintings further, footsteps echoed from the underground entrance. Someone was approaching…
